What Are The Different Types Of Common Brain Injuries?

There are many different examples of brain injuries, and the symptoms can range from a mild headache to long-lasting neurological deficits.

The simplest way to divide the common types of brain injuries is categorizing them as nontraumatic brain injuries and traumatic brain injuries (TBI).

Traumatic Brain Injuries

TBI are the result of external force being applied to the skull, resulting in damage to the brain. Examples of TBI include:

  • Concussion: occurs when the brain hits the inside of the skull
  • Skull fractures: ranging from thin cracks to deep fractures that can allow fluid leakage
  • Edema: brain swelling resulting in pressure
  • Hematoma: a pooling of blood in the brain or area around the brain

These injuries can result in long-term neurological deficits that require ongoing treatment and care.

Nontraumatic Brain Injuries

These injuries are not the result of the application of external force; they are the result of internal issues. Examples include:

  • Brain hemorrhage: uncontrolled bleeding in or near the brain
  • Stroke: lack of blood flow to the brain caused by a blocked artery or a burst blood vessel
  • Hypoxic brain injury: lack of oxygen to an area of the brain
  • Anoxic brain injury: complete absence of oxygen to an area of the brain

It is important to realize that “nontraumatic” in no ways detracts from the seriousness of these brain injuries. For example, a brain hemorrhage can result in death and a stroke can result in death or long-term issues.
